From October 7 to January 4, 2024, I’m showing eight watercolor paintings on the plastic surface Yupo at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. I chose to paint these microscopes for their unusual shapes and expressive qualities. Until microscope makers discovered the best way to illuminate slides, they experimented with many fanciful tube and mirror shapes, and these shapes give the instruments an almost-human quality.
